Flower lovers may want to visit the
island in spring when its grounds are coloured yellow horned
poppies, white sea lilies, purple catchflies and blue anchusa, the
main floral explosion happens as early as February, and you would
find it hard to escape the fresh smell of newly bloomed flowers. At
this time the island forest and country side becomes a canvas of
colour and sent.
Along with the horticultural , the animal lovers are in for a treat to find the Rhodes ecosystem remains largely unchanged for over 100 years. Through out spring and autumn hundred of birds can be seen migrating to the northern hemisphere, swifts, larks and red footed falcons can seen flying over the coast heading to there mating grounds.
Reptiles are common on Rhodes, but only very, very few are harmful to humans. There are many beautiful and brightly coloured lizards on the island, from tiny pale geckos, to Rhodes dragon, and the often heard but seldom seen bright green tree frog.
The Interior, is a useful term for all the inland and more rural bits of the island, and even though Rhodes is a tourist centred island, its country side is still a fantastic way to spend the day. Mount Ataviros is arguably the most beautiful and romantic spot on the island, it’s the highest point on the island, and the combination of ruin and view that makes it all the way to Crete, makes it a lovers paradise, a perfect place to open a bottle of wine and watch the sun go down.
There are many organised trips to the inner island county side - especially to palaces like Embonas and Laerma, which are favoured for there cooler climates. It is a fantastic landscape for walkers to discover, there are numerous set tracks, over all types of terrain, dense forest, light woods or more open areas.
A wonderful little village to travel to if you want to see life in the Rhodes much as it would have been hundreds of years ago is Embonas. it’s a small prosperous, if depopulated village dedicated to making wine and fine cloth, a visit to the Emery wine Factory, that has tours followed by wine tasting.
