Quote
Lindos is a small picturesque town on
the east side of the island, about 55 km from Rhodes town. The
small town, which is also an archaeological site, has been a
popular tourist destination for many years due to its situation on
a large golden bay, perfect for catching some rays. Many visitors
come to stay here and its from Lindos that they hire their
car.
What draws many people to Lindos is its breathtaking views and fantastic ruins that the town has been build around. The community of Lindos dates back more than 3500 years and today you can still se the ruins of the 4th-century-AD temple of Athena (the Patron goddess of Lindos).
This beautiful building is consider one of the high points of Greek art, and the marble pillars will be sure to take your breath away. The Site is considered a Grade 1 archaeological site, cars and bikes have been outlawed so the only way there is on foot our by donkey.
Next to the temple of Athena lie the Acropolis and the Knights’ Staircase. The Knights’ Staircase is the remains of a stronghold build by the Knights of ST John some time before 1317, from the top you can see the wide main bay at the north of the city, right down to the quieter azure waters of St pauls bay at the south.
Those of you looking to see something off the beaten track may want to travel round the the tourist area of the main bay, right to the northen tip, where you can see the Tomb of Cleobluos, a moral phlisopher that lived in rhodes. This is something not all tourists will know about, and is definetly worth the trip.
But if its excitement your looking for you will find your fill at Lindos bay, with water-skiing, parasailing and pedaloes available from small kiosks one the bay, but if relaxing is more your thing you will have no trouble finding deck chairs or parasols from local vendors.
