Don’t be fooled by the title of ‘old’ or ‘Medieval’, what you are going to see is not a ruin of an ancient town, but the largest and oldest inhabited medieval town in Europe, with many people living just the way the would hundreds of years ago.

Medieval town is a perfect place to get lost if you have an hour or two free. Getting lost is one of the great joys of old town, with its 200 streets and countless side streets, there is treasure to behold at every turn, but if the feeling ever get to much for you just ask one of the friendly locals to point you to Sokratours street, the closet thing the have to a high street. Street vendors and quaint shops make for a fantastic day out in the sleepy old town.

Ancient town lies about 2km for the main town and goes by the very un-Greek name of ‘Monte Smith’, so called because Admiral William Sydney Smith picked this hill for a look out for Napoleon’s fleet in 1802. The hill, 111 meters tall, can be walked in under an hour and holds the ruins of what was once the islands most important shrines ‘The temple of Zeus Pylieus and Athena Polias’ of which a few of the pillars have been restored in a near by olive garden.
